How to upgrade Windows 8.1 Pro Preview (Windows 8) to Windows 8.1 Pro Release (RTM, Final) using Microsoft Store App

In this guide we will show how to upgrade Windows 8.1 Pro Preview (Windows 8) to Windows 8.1 Pro Release (RTM, Final) using Microsoft Store App. This upgrade is available for free.

Firstly, you can right click to the Start button and select “System” to view basic information about your computer. This screenshot show us the previous Windows version.

Before upgrading be sure, that your Windows System drive has at least 10GB free space for successful upgrade. Please make a backup of all your personal files, folders, all Apps will be needed to reinstall.

It is recommended to turn off antivirus software temporarily.

To get free Windows 8.1 Upgrade, please Sign In into Microsoft Account in your Windows OS. Now, please run your Internet Explorer browser and paste to this link:

ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade

and then press “Enter”.

Your Windows OS will start Microsoft Store App and show next window with Windows 8.1 Pro Download button. Press it to start downloading.

Now Microsoft Store could make installing invisible, so please press “Win” button on your keyboard, enter in your Internet Explorer new command:

ms-windows-store:installprogress

to view this window. We left our PC for 3 hours cause the download speed was not very fast.

In 3 hours Windows 8.1 Upgrade shows us this window – we have pressed “Continue” button as shown.

Unfortunately, when the “Applying changes” mode achieve 62% (in other cases 63% or 64%), the upgrade installation was freezed (stuck) on this percentage. We made a decision – restart OS. So, please press “Win” button and Restart OS if your Upgrade process was stuck also on “Applying changes” step. After Windows Restart, please enter again

ms-windows-store:installprogress

command in Internet Explorer or Win+R keys for Execute.

Then, Windows 8.1 upgrade informs you that there were some errors during upgrading by clicking to the same tile. Please select “Try again”. Our second attempt after Windows Restart was successful.

If you see “Gathering info”, your Windows 8.1 Upgrade using Microsoft Store is continuing.

And now, when we see “Preparing to restart”, upgrade process is fine.

Now, Microsoft Store informs us about PC restart – press the button as shown.

Windows 8.1 is setting up the necessary files.

On this step, Windows 8.1 Upgrade informs us about devices percentage ready.

Then, Windows 8.1 is “Getting ready”

And now we can see other “Setting up a few more things”

Now, if you have purchased Windows 8.1 product key and you are upgrading Windows 8.1 Pro Preview version, please enter it. For Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Upgrade you have not see this Window. To activate Windows 8.1 later 8.1 please skip this step.

Now, please accept Windows 8.1 License Terms.

Then, personalize your OS color scheme and press “Next” button.

For most users we can recommend “Use express settings” mode as shown.

Please Sing In into your existing Microsoft Account as shown with your email and password. Sometime Microsoft Account will verify your identification by sending to you SMS code for verification, email code, or call to your phone. These verification modes are not shown in our guide.
